When we read the Psalms, there’s this theme in the authors’ writings about giving thanks to God because he is good. Everything else that we can be thankful for comes from this understanding of God’s character, his goodness. Our food, clothing, shelter, wisdom, relationships, and ability to love comes from the goodness of God. By understanding this, it encourages us to list out our thanks to God. If we truly began to list our thanksgivings to God, we would see three things happen. It would bring gratefulness for the past, hope for the future, and breed humility in our hearts. Thanking God for the little things helps us understand that those tiny moments are integral to the big items he puts us through. It shows us that without God and our Christian community, we wouldn’t accomplish much. Whether you’re reading Psalms 107, 118, or 136 let us meditate on this beginning verse of each, “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.”
