When we think of discipleship, we are first often drawn to the twelve disciples of Jesus or view it as this one-on-one intellectual/spiritual mentorship between two individuals. The great commission didn’t say build an incredible mentorship, create intimate groups of twelve, or set up a neat mission strategy for the gospel. Jesus said make disciples. Making disciples takes time and relationship. Jesus poured into 12 men for 3 years. He utilized everyday life for teachable moments using fig trees, farming, or fishing. The early church’s process of discipling new converts took 3 years, and that was just the start. Our own discipleship moments can come throughout the day such as advising a young teen texting you about girl problems, a phone call with a neighbor concerned over his children, or teaching a 3-year-old how to share. A disciple is a dedicated follower of Jesus. Dedication to follow is a lifelong process, so we must live our lives in a way that we are always seeking to make disciples.
